Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs). According to the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization, SEM methods include: search engine optimization (or SEO), paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.[1] Other sources, including the New York Times, define SEM as the practice of buying paid search listings.

I have to say from experience, paying for search listings can get pretty expensive. The term is known a pay per click. It is real easy to lose some big money using pay per click advertising. If you have an offer that converts well you can make some money. If your offer does not convert to cash, then you will spend your money with no return.

I build pages and optimize them for the search term that I am targeting. This is known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization), this is where your pages get listed high in the search results free because of heavily related subject content. This gives you even more website traffic and it's free.

The cool thing about using this method is that when you optimize a page correctly and get listed high with the big search engines, (Google, Yahoo, MSN) you will have a steady flow of free traffic sometimes for years to come.

Another way to increase your placement with the major search engines is through some Article Marketing. You can submit your articles to article directories which will provide valuable back links to your main Web Site.
